I have always had health insurance. When I formed my own company I had to purchase insurance at full price on the open market. Every year the price increased dramatically. Subsequently my wife developed Lupus. About 5 years ago my total health insurance bill with deductible was costing north of $20,000 per year. I decided I would get a catastrophic insurance policy and save the for the $10,000 yearly deductible. We were turned down by every insurance company because of my wife’s Lupus. We decided then to split our policies. My wife had to enroll in the Texas High Risk Pool while my daughter and I enrolled in a catastrophic plan. We’ve reduced our insurance to around $12,000 per year with a $10,000 deductible for my daughter and me and a $5,000 deductible for my wife. I also purchased for $1,100/year a health insurance policy for my daughter that covers her general medical while at the University.

Healthcare reform was necessary. With this reform eventually screening coverage will be required, my daughter can stay on my policy while she finishes college, my policy cannot be rescinded, and my lifetime insurance caps are gone.

While we need to improve legislation going forward to ultimately remove the thievery of the insurance companies, it is shortsighted to want to repeal healthcare reform. Those who voted for the bill should be proud of it. Instead of running from it they should educate Americans on why it was done and its advantages with stories like mine and the lady in the video and millions more. The reality is the Right Wing does not have answers for the problems that affect the real middleclass. Their well design misinformation campaigns must be attacked and neutralized.
