Don’t hold middle class hostage to interests of partisans and profiteers who cratered our economy
Dear Congress,
As citizens we watch in utter despair as our Congress continues to gamble with our financial future by refusing to reach a compromise to raise our debt ceiling.
We object to the stance being taken by corporate profiteers and their representatives in Washington — opposing the closing of loopholes that benefit multinational corporations and the wealthy, and opposing the return of tax rates on the wealthy to the levels we had when our economy was thriving and our budget was balanced. We consider this to be an assault on the middle class and the working people of America.
Balancing the budget mostly by cutting social programs is effectively a tax increase on the poor and middle class. We cannot understand why no sacrifices are being asked of wealthiest among us, those who benefited the most from the last 30 years of trickle-down economic policies, and those who were bailed out by the American tax payer after causing our economic collapse. In fact, conflating the raising of the debt ceiling with a budget compromise is in itself a false choice. As a respected and responsible nation such as ours should honor its financial obligations irrespective of its politics.
We insist that a balanced compromise be reached before the August 2nd deadline. If not, we pledge to hold accountable all politicians who have failed to put the People before the profiteers, and put the credit of the United States and the financial well-being of its citizens in jeopardy.
