Sorry, I just needed to vent a bit.
I’m sure everyone’s seen the latest ABC/Washington Post poll, which shows a 2 point race just ahead of the first debate.
I’m sure many have also seen the cross-tabs, which boil things down to this:
Chiefly, though, Trump’s fortunes rest on his core supporters, white men who lack a four-year college degree, an economically stressed and socially and politically conservative group.He leads Clinton among them by 76-17 percent, an enormous 59-point advantage. That’s widened from 40 points early this month; it’s a group Mitt Romney won by 31 points — half Trump’s current margin — in 2012.
So how is Hillary still ahead? Simple: She’s ahead of him by 50 points among all nonwhites. She’s ahead by 19 points among women. By 24 points among those under 40 (and by 1 point among those under 64). She’s ahead by 19 points among those with college degrees. By 2 points among white women. By 9 points among white college grads.
That’s right: Hillary’s “Why aren’t I ahead by 50 points?” question was supposed to be rhetorical, but we now have a real answer for her: The only reason this isn’t a complete blowout for Hillary is because of non-college grad white men, period.
In other words, as several people have put it on Twitter, it’s non-college grad white men…versus everyone else.
And yet…even then, even with a whopping 59 point loss among this group, there’s still 17% of them who support Hillary over the Orange Thing. Still 17% of this demographic who are desperately trying to hold onto some basic sense of decency and sanity.
When I think about all of us (including the 17% of this subgroup) screaming into the wind about what a racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, con-artist fascist moron Trump is, a scene from the 1989 Vietnam War film “Casualties of War” comes to mind.
For those who haven’t seen it, it’s based on a true story about a U.S. soldier whose platoon kidnaps, gang rapes and murders a Vietnamese girl. He refuses to participate and tries to save her but fails. When he gets back to his unit, he tries to have justice served by telling what happened to his superiors…only to be further dismayed when they pretty much shrug it off…followed by his platoon mates trying to frag him…at which point this scene happens:
This is where we find ourselves.
Those on the left, center and right who either actively support Hillary or, at the very least, are willing to hold their nose and vote for her in order to avoid the utter devastation of the United States which a Trump victory would bring have tried to make it crystal clear how horrific he would be.
We told them.
We told everyone EVERYTHING…
and they DON’T CARE.
