A message from one of many Millennials to the Democratic Party

I have continued to watch many of my Hillary Clinton friends blame Millennials and others for Hillary Clinton’s electoral college loss. I have watch how the Democratic Party has tried to ostracize some Bernie supporters as well. That senseless act if continued will lead to a 2018 defeat. This Millennials message is one every should read now.

It is time to put the 2016 election in the past and unite the Democratic Party for the fight ahead. This thoughtful Millennial is ready as are many others. Cody Pogue posted the following on Facebook.

Cody’s Millennials representative message

I have seen several articles recently about why millennials didn’t support Hillary in the Democratic primary. As a person who voted for Hillary in the general election but not in the primary, I would like to make it clear that the issue was income inequality and lack of upward mobility.

It had nothing to do with Hillary or Bernie. In fact, we were begging Elizabeth Warren to run before Bernie decided to run. Look up “ready for Warren” if you do not believe me. It had nothing to do with us hating women. Put aside the silly “Bernie Bro” myth. Most of us consider ourselves feminists and have fought for women’s rights, voted for women, and would proudly have voted for Elizabeth Warren. It had nothing to do with us being the supposed “purity generation.” We never expected purity on every issue or even any issue.

If you want to understand why we didn’t vote for Hillary in the primary, do not focus on Hillary and Bernie. Instead, study the Occupy Wallstreet movement. The Occupy Wallstreet movement and the Bernie Sanders campaign were one in the same. Same message. Same purpose. Same passion. Many of the same people. We did not occupy wall street because of Hillary Clinton. We occupied wall street because we were quickly losing hope that we would ever have the opportunity to work hard and earn a fair wage like our parents’ generation did. We felt that the system was rigged and that both democratic and republican politicians were bought off by the wealthy and that for the last 30 years politicians from both parties have ignored these economic issues and instead focused only on social issues alone so that they could continue getting money from wealthy donors. All we wanted was the opportunity to work hard and earn a fair living.

We did not cost Hillary Clinton the election. Most of us voted for her. Hillary Clinton lost the election because America has spent the last 30 years without any serious attempts to unrig the economy and people are desperate. She did not understand that and it is why she lost the election. Don’t blame Millennials for the fact that union workers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin who voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012 voted for Trump in 2016. They voted for Trump because he gave them an economic message they were desperate to hear and she did not.

On a final note, we millennials are Democrats and you cannot change that. No matter how hard you try to kick us out of the Democratic Party, we are not going to leave. We know that you do not want us. We know you do not want us voting in the democratic primary, being precinct chairs, going to district or state conventions, or holding political office. The reality, however, is that we are here to stay. We are democrats and you cannot change that. Instead of trying to kick us out of the Democratic Primary, you should find a way to work with us. We care mostly about the same issues you care about. We are horrified by the Trump presidency. We want to stop his policies. Some of us have lived in complete depression for months because of this guy’s policies. We care about the issues you care about, but we also just happen to care about one issue that has been ignored for the last 30 years a lot because it affects us in a huge way.

We want to join together and work with you. You just have to stop trying to demonize us, stop pretending we hate women and stop trying to kick us out of the party. We can make this work together. I have hope that we can do it.
